After writing a couple of blogs about the unpleasant sexual bullying of Donald Trump it’s consistent but worrying to get back to the UK news only to find that sexual bullying isn’t uncommon on this side of the Atlantic either.
My wife today sent me the following cutting from today’s Saturday Mirror.
“…and so the most high-profile rape trial in recent British history ends pretty much as most rape claims have throughout time…
With the woman smeared as a feckless slag and the accused man excused as an idiot ensnared by female wiles and without sufficient wit to control his own c**k.
And in this one verdict I don’t think I exaggerate in claiming it takes the work of police and charities back at least a decade in their work to improve the shockingly poor rates of convictions for rape.
What woman in her right mind would go to police this morning if she were raped last night after too much to drink? I wouldn’t. Back in 2012 a jury convicted Ched Evans of rape on the evidence before it. Four years later he was unanimously cleared.
Yet the evidence about what actually happened on that fateful night was virtually identical. The only real difference between then and now was the defence team had chosen to build its case almost entirely on rubbishing the woman’s reputation. And so hour by hour over the past fortnight her life and sexual history was trampled to dirt. A woman already traumatised by what happened that night – criminal or not – was destroyed yet further.
And so Ched Evans is finally innocent.Innocent of rape but not innocent of being a cheating scumbag who had sex with a girl his mate had already had sex with while his younger brother watched through a window. A woman he’d never spoken to before and afterwards left lying in a hotel room while he escaped through a fire door. All behind the back of his loyal girlfriend.
This, at the very best, is the truth of Ched Evans.
