A world without Down’s Syndrome

Liam Bairstow, the Down’s syndrome star on Coronation Street

Last night comedian Sally Phillips broadcast a programme on BBC about life with her Downs syndrome son, Olly.

It raised the issue of prenatal screening for disabilities like Down’s syndrome.
In Iceland there are no Down’s syndrome children, because screening of affected mothers leads to the abortion of Down’s syndrome children.

Is this wise, or does it remind you of the Nazi search for a master race?
After eliminating Down’s syndrome would this kind of society next want to eliminate those who won’t achieve 9 A stars at O level?

The way “civilised” people relate to those with disabilities is absolutely crucial.
We need to love disabilities, for otherwise we become fascist.
