64 years ago – just a couple of months before I arrived on planet earth, the first World Cup to be held in Brazil took place. England deigned to enter the competition for the first time in history, and were drawn to play in a first round group alongside Spain, Chile and the USA.
Having invented the game England were undoubtedly the team with the best pedigree in the world and when they thrashed both Italy and Portugal in warm up friendlies only weeks earlier it seemed that they would lift the trophy for the first time. The world’s best player Stanley Mathews was rested for later matches.
But the incredible occurred. An American team of part timers, fed like a sacrificial lamb to the three lions, scored the only goal of the game and eliminated the tournament favorites, 1-0.
