What price football success?

Yesterday Chelsea were dumped out of the FA Cup by Manchester City. Earlier this season I was at the City ground to see City thrashed by European champions Bayern Munich.

So what price is success?
“I think Man United need five or six players” ITV pundit Roy Keane said after their surprise home draw against Fulham last week, adding that the club’s transfer policy is taking its toll on Moyes’ who needed to bring in half-a-dozen players last summer.
Keane explained “They’ve kind of cut corners in terms of transfers in the last few years” adding “they’ve not gone out and got the big players, and it’s just caught up with them this year”.

https://youtube.googleapis.com/v/vCAAuoq7oOo&source=udsIs Keane’s bottom line that Manchester United should buy 50 or 60 top class players just to stop them playing against Manchester United?  Why not 100 or 300, or 1000?
The logical extension to this solution is of course nonsense. It’s the kind of dreamworld that many football commentators live in.
In the real world the Quarter-final draw is:

Arsenal v Everton
Brighton or Hull City v Sunderland
Sheffield United v Wednesday or Charlton Athletic
Manchester City v Wigan Athletic
Ties are on 8-9 March.
