…just be close at hand”, sang Dusty Springfield in 1967.

At her death in 1999 from lung cancer Elton John claimed her to be the finest white woman singer in the history of rock music. Dusty was gay, and homophobia was fashionable. In many quarters it still is.

This week a footballer I never admired, Joey Barton, announced on Twitter that he will be wearing rainbow coloured football laces as his contribution to an anti homophobic campaign.

Well done Joey.

Because of your reputation on the football field career I never thought you to have balls.
