Life or death issues – Choking

Walking into the living room the other day I found my stepdaughter Carolyn choking. What could be done?

All of us happen across such crises in life and we need to react quickly. It can make the difference between life and death. Since I didn’t know what to do I decided to Google the matter. I pass on the tips so when you come across a similar issue you’ll know what to do.

1. Assure the victim that you are going to ease their discomfort and help them.
Explain what you are doing at each stage.

2. Take the bottom part (heel) of your hand and deliver 5 separate forceful strikes between the person’s shoulder blades.

3. Try to dislodge the object with each one, and look for evidence of improvement after each strike.

6. If the back blows fail, perform 5 abdominal thrusts (also known as the Heimlich Maneuver). So, standing behind the victim wrap your arms below the rib cage, and take the underside of one of your fists and place it near the middle of the person’s abdomen, with the thumb-side against the abdomen, just above the navel and below the breastbone.
7. Grasp the fist in your other hand, and Give up to 5 separate, inward and upward thrusts. Continue until the obstruction is dislodged – check after each thrust. Stop if the victim becomes unconscious. If the obstruction has not been relieved, alternate between 5 back blows and 5 abdominal thrusts until the object becomes unstuck.

I attach a video from YouTube, and in the next lessons I will concentrate on other common problems you may come across. With a bit of study you can become part of the solution. I will look at CPR  (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation), heart attack, burns, and finish off with childbirth.
Yes, after reading my blog you will be delivering babies like shelling peas.

First of all, of course, I will have to Google the matter.

Now 70, I'm getting back into website development and brand protection, as well as showcasing the delightful artistic talents of my beautiful wife Lynne. My projection will encompass a lifetime of database marketing, as well as the Christian democratic socialist ideals of my wife and I.
