Letter to Manhattan

It’s been 23°-25° C in Accrington for the past 2 days, and I see from the forecast it’s been quite a bit colder in NYC. Hope you remembered to pack your thermals.
One of the disorienting aspects of living in the US is that Yanks stick to Fahrenheit. You have to remember that to convert Fahrenheit to Centigrade you take away 32, divide by 9 and multiply by 5, and to convert Centigrade to Fahrenheit you divide by 5 multiply by 9, and add 32.
Unfortunately, as I sat outside taking in the beautiful early evening warmth yesterday a bird pooped on my forearm.
The direction could of course have been worse, but it was one of those chance happenings that make you reflect on how but for chance happening things could turn out very differently.
You ate with Josh last weekend, and I remember that on the day of the 9-11 tragedy his grandmother was being laid to rest. I called Josh’s Mum and Dad’s home to ask if they were OK, to be told by his typically sharp witted dad that were it not for Josh’s attendance at his grandmother’s funeral he may have been one of the statistics in the twin tower’s catastrophe. This was Joshua’s Grandmother’s greatest gift.
