Christmas-time is a mixture of joy and sorrow. On the one hand, many of us enjoy gifts surplus to our requirements, and on the other hand deprivation and want is all around.
It’s fraudulent to enjoy the good without acknowledging want, and one of our most pressing duties is to teach our children and grandchildren not only how to enjoy the good, but also to take responsibility for the need surrounding us.
Last night we had our grandchildren sleep over with us. As usual it was lovely, ending with a communal shower, a big glass of wine, a few story books and sleep.
But today it crossed my mind that we forgot to remember the needy. We need to do this regularly if our grandchildren are to take on board the problems of the world. We mustn’t opt out. I love my brother because before every meal he remembers those in need. So should we all.
So how was it for you?
